Zika Mosquito Can Transmit Other Viruses, Too stat : WebMD

By Robert PreidtHealthDay ReporterFRIDAY, May 19, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- The mosquito species that's the main carrier of the Zika virus might also transmit two other viruses -- chikungunya and dengue -- in a single bite, researchers report. "A mosquito, in theory, could give you multiple viruses at once," said Claudia Ruckert, a postdoctoral researcher at Colorado State University. "We will study how these virus-mosquito interactions change when there are two viruses, what gets transmitted from a coinfected mosquito, and how that differs from a mosquito infected with one virus," Ruckert said. Zika virus often causes flu-like symptoms. "Depending on what diagnostics are used, and depending on what the clinicians think, they might not notice there's another virus," Ruckert said.

He added, "Aggressive mosquito control measures don't seem to be working as well as we would have liked." Even mosquito control officials have cautioned that insecticides are becoming less and less effective. The mosquitoes that spread Zika are called Aedes aegypti. I think we should be focused on the root of the problem — identifying new, innovative solutions to cut down on the population of Aedes aegypti.

'Smart' Mosquito Trap Used To Prevent Spread Of Zika And West Nile Virus – Houston Public Media

Mosquito season's here; feds and Florida must get a jump on Zika
"If the mosquito is not a Zika virus mosquito, and if it's not the West Nile virus mosquito, it's not going to go into the trap," Debboun said. /Harris County Mosquito Control has four types of traps for its surveys — and one of them is a "smart" trap. Harris County has been pilot-testing the Microsoft Trap, which captures particular mosquito species — those capable of spreading the Zika virus and other diseases. The Montgomery County Public Health District has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus — the first in the state for 2017. "The Microsoft trap is programmed to the wing span of the mosquitoes.
