Virginia urges residents to help combat spread of Zika virus
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Virginia health officials are encouraging residents to help combat the spread of the Zika virus as mosquito season begins. The Virginia Health Department's Zika website provides information about how residents can take precautions against the mosquito-borne illness. Officials say residents can help prevent the spread of Zika by tipping containers that collect water, like flower pots, where mosquitoes like to breed. They're also encouraging residents who travel to Zika-affected areas to guard themselves against mosquitoes for three weeks after they return so they don't pass Zika to mosquitoes. There have been 115 reported cases of Zika in Virginia since December 2015.Area health officials took steps Saturday to prevent the spread of the Zika virus after a Clark County resident began showing symptoms. Zika virus symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. Patterson said this is the first suspected case of Zika in Clark County and the third in Ohio this year. The main concern at this point is making sure a mosquito doesn't pick up the virus, Patterson said. Clark County Health Commissioner Charlie Patterson said the unidentified person recently returned from a trip to a "Zika hot spot" and there is no evidence that the disease has been transmitted locally.
