Pregnant Women Unaware How Zika Virus Can Spread, Survey FindsBy: Raul Reyes |Pregnant women at risk of Zika virus infection may not be aware of the various ways the virus is spread or be taking the proper preventative measures. A survey conducted by researchers at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston focused on pregnant women in Southeast Texas. Women surveyed also said they would like to know more about the Zika virus from their health care provider. The participants included women born in the U.S. as well as women who had immigrated to the U.S. from central and South America where the Zika virus is locally transmitted. Another cause for concern was that most of the women surveyed did not frequently use mosquito repellant.Professionals said the Zika virus strikes a developing baby early, and the sooner someone knows about it the sooner they can treat the symptoms. She's doing what she can to avoid a Zika infection that could impact her baby's life. BROWNSVILLE – The Centers for Disease Control said the best way to test an unborn baby for the Zika virus is using the placenta. Not to mention microcephaly – the high profile symptom linked to a Zika infection. The Cameron County Health Department said it is now the most reliable way to test for the virus.
