Ransomware cyberattack: Computer expert who blocked WannaCry virus says he's no heroUpdatedThe veil of anonymity has been lifted from the young British computer expert credited with stopping the WannaCry cyberattack, with 22-year-old Marcus Hutchins using his first face-to-face interview to say he's "definitely not a hero". After more analysis, Mr Hutchins, an avid surfer, plans to take a vacation, traveling to Las Vegas and California on the company dime. Mr Hutchins, from the south coast of England, discovered a so-called "kill switch" that slowed the unprecedented outbreak on Friday. Mr Hutchins said he stumbled across the solution when he was analysing a sample of the malicious code and noticed it was linked to an unregistered web address. Mr Hutchins himself is part of a global community that constantly watches for attacks and works to thwart them, often sharing information on Twitter.
The Times, referring to payment data, indicated that as a result of global cyberattacks, the creators of the WannaCry virus received a total of $42.000. The WannaCry extortion virus, which hacked more than 200.000 people and organizations in 150 countries, could be created by North Korean hackers from the Lazarus group, accused of organizing major attacks on the Central Bank of Bangladesh and SonyPictures Entertainment. "Do you remember our North Korean bank robbers through SWIFT and Sony Pictures scrapers? According to the analyst, the code that was found in WannaCry coincides with the code from Trojan viruses that Lazarus used earlier. The detective is getting stronger and now the same code is found in #WannaCry and in Trojans from Lazarus.
