Of the Maryland cases, four were in Baltimore and two were on the Eastern Shore. Already this year, 19 cases of Zika have been reported in Maryland and 13 have been reported in the District. The Zika virus most commonly is spread through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, typically in subtropic regions. Maryland had 170 reported cases of Zika between 2015 and last year. "From a mosquito control standpoint, the most important thing is eliminating breeding zones," said Jason Schellhardt, a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

How a Redlands native is helping Puerto Rico with Zika virus outbreak

The work of a Redlands native can now be used by health officials in Puerto Rico to help families impacted by the Zika virus. Now, her work can be used by Puerto Rico public health officials in providing resources to assist those affected by the virus. Pregnant women infected with the virus can pass it on to their unborn children, which can cause birth defects. Healy spent a month in Puerto Rico investigating the number of people infected with the mosquito-borne virus that has spread across Caribbean countries as well as South and Central Americas. By using the Bayesian method, Healy was able to estimate the number of people and pregnant women infected by the virus and babies born with Microcephaly, a birth defect caused by the Zika virus, over a certain time period.
