Brazil declares end of Zika state of emergency but UK urges caution stat : The Independent

The Brazilian government may have declared the end of the state of emergency related to the Zika virus, but UK health authorities still warn travellers of a "high risk of Zika virus transmission". The health ministry claims it has reduced cases of the Zika virus dramatically. Zika is a mosquito-borne virus whose symptoms are similar to dengue fever, including headaches and aching joints. In response to the outbreak which took hold in the southern summer of 2015-16, Brazil launched a mosquito eradication campaign. Tony Mason, chief executive of the Latin American Travel Association, said: "The Brazilian government had confirmed that cases of the Zika virus are now down by 95 per cent in comparison to 2016.

"The end of the emergency doesn't mean the end of surveillance or assistance" to affected families, said Adeilson Cavalcante, the secretary for health surveillance at Brazil's Health Ministry. From January through mid-April, the Health Ministry recorded 95 percent fewer cases than during the same period last year. The Health Ministry said those efforts have helped to dramatically reduce cases of Zika.
