The number of new HIV diagnoses in Midlands and the East of England soared five times in the last two decade. Since 2000, there have actually been more diagnoses caused by heterosexual sex - 12,230- than by men having sex with men (4,940 cases). The increase started after a relatively stable period between 1986 and 1996, when the number of new HIV diagnoses fluctuated between 190 and 204. The majority of new HIV diagnoses occurs in people aged 35-49. In recent years, sex between men has once again became the main source of probable transmission of HIV.

The new cases were registered by the Telangana State Aids Control Society, which supplies medicines and care to those affected by the virus. The total number of people living with HIV is now 1,73,398 in the state and the records are being kept since 1998, an RTI filed by an NGO has revealed. This has led to major shortage and the efforts on the ground, across the state, have been affected."
