After serving as deputy FDA commissioner, he worked for numerous companies and investment firms in a variety of roles, including as a consultant, paid speaker, investor and adviser. Much of the hearing — and most of the Democratic senators' questions — focused on Gottlieb's business connections to the drug industry. Gottlieb was not immediately named as a member, and it's not clear whether he will join if confirmed as FDA commissioner by the Senate. President Trump nominated physician Scott Gottlieb to be commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

However, the report published on April 4 acknowledged that investigators could not confirm conclusively whether the women were infected with Zika, citing "evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection". About 1 in 10 pregnant women suffering from the infection have given birth to a baby having Zika virus-related birth defects. They were diagnosed by their health care provider after developing symptoms of Zika infection that included rash, fever, arthralgia and red eyes. These estimates are higher than what health officials have previously reported and highlight the serious risk for birth defects posed by Zika infection during pregnancy. Zika virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947.
