2 pregnant Utah women who lost their babies had Zika virus
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Two pregnant women in Utah have lost their babies in the first trimester after contracting Zika within the last five months, according to a new state health department report. The Utah Department of Health has not found any Zika cases that were contracted in Utah. It has been corrected to clarify the women lived in Utah, but contracted Zika elsewhere. The report released this month by Utah's department of health shows that since the beginning of last year, 11 pregnant women in Utah contracted Zika while visiting another country. The report shows that a total of 29 people have contracted Zika in Utah.

Natural immune molecule shows protective effect against Zika virus in mouse, monkey models

The authors conclude that 25HC shows promise as a natural agent that can combat a broad array of viruses, including Zika virus. The researchers next established that 25HC is protective in mouse and monkey models of Zika virus infection. Administering the molecule, called 25-hydroxycholesterol or 25HC, to pregnant mice reduced Zika virus infection in the fetal brain and protected against Zika-induced microcephaly. A molecule naturally produced by the immune system protects mice and monkeys against Zika virus infection, an international team of researchers has found. Additional preclinical research is needed before investigating whether 25HC can safely protect humans against Zika virus infection and associated birth defects.
