Flu cases jump in first two months of 2017 quoting : Corpus Christi Caller

"There's a lot of susceptible people out there who could get the flu, but you still need to get the flu shot," Burgin said. There has been a major spike in flu cases since the first week of 2017 with 100 or more cases being reported every week, according to the health district. "Those strains that are covered are protected by the flu shot, and there is some cross coverage." The flu vaccine this season is about 53 percent effective, he added. Dr. William W. Burgin Jr. with the Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District attributes the increase from 105 cases in late February 2016 to 507 cases now to a less effective flu vaccine.

Flu cases on the rise in North Carolina; 44 deaths, 10 in the last week

So far, North Carolina has seen 44 flu-related deaths with 10 in the last week. "It's doing its job in terms of protecting people from dying and becoming seriously ill with the flu," said Dr. Morrow. Dr. Morrow said the best thing you can do once you're sick is rest and drink lots of fluids. "You may get the flu even after vaccinations, not from the flu vaccine itself, but from the flu virus that's in the community."Morrow said a lot of people in the area are sick right now. Doctors say the best protection against the flu is to get the vaccine and, of course, wash your hands.
