Young elephant at Saint Louis Zoo dies of viral infectionST. LOUIS (AP) — A Common Asian elephant at the Saint Louis Zoo has died. The zoo tells six-year-old Kenzi died of a viral contagion — elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, or EEHV — known to be fatal to elephants. Kenzi was born in captivity to 2 other zoo elephants, Raja & Rani. All of the elephants at the zoo are under lock monitoring for the virus, & nothing have tested positive. A four-year-old elephant at the zoo is being treated by therapy as a precaution.

The Zoo routinely & proactively tests the elephants for EEHV as portion of its comprehensive health monitoring programme. The zoo's elephant care team successfully treated eleven-year-olds Jade & Maliha for 2 different types of EEHV-one on 2 breaking up occasions. "This is a destructive loss for Kenzi's family, the elephant care team & the St. Louis society," said Martha Fischer, Curator of Ungulates & Elephants.
