INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Family and friends of a 2-year-old girl from Plainfield are hoping to raise awareness after she died from what doctors believe to be Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. A friend speaking on behalf of the family said Kenley Ratliff loved spending time outdoors with her family. The Indiana State Health Department said it received 40 reported cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in 2016 and 30 reported cases in 2015. Right now family and friends told 24-Hour News 8 they're waiting for autopsy results to confirm whether it was a tick bite that caused her death. "She loved to dance, she loved music, she loved the Bruno Mars song that would sing in the backseat," she said.

Doctors suspect Kenley contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever through a bite, the relative said. They have predicted an especially high danger of tick-borne diseases including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other bacterial infections. Most often they are rash, fever, headache and nausea. Kenley's family said the toddler loved to play outside, and relatives had no idea where she may have picked up a tick. An Indiana toddler died on Sunday after she caught a bacterial infection she may have got from a tick bite, her family said. Kenley Ratliff, 2, fell ill a week ago after she contracted an infection believed to be Rocky Mountain spotted fever, transmitted through tick bites, her family told WTHR. "Now our goal is to spread awareness of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in hopes of saving other children's lives," they said on the GoFundMe page. Though doctors are still waiting for test results to give an official diagnosis, pediatricians believe Ratliff caught Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which has been on the rise in the state.
