The Florida Department of Health in Orange County is enlisting the eastern mosquito fish in its ongoing battle against mosquitoes and the
Zika virus they could carry. In Florida, Orange is so far the only health department in Central Florida to use mosquito fish. In New Jersey, for example, the state Bureau of Freshwater Fisheries has been breeding mosquito fish for 25 years. The department has been introducing the fish species into abandoned green swimming pools in Orange County to gauge their effectiveness at eating mosquito larvae. And just as important, the mosquito fish had reproduced, "thus ensuring continued elimination of future mosquitoes."The self-sustaining process works better than other systems of mosquito control, Donahue said.
