CDC: Zika can cause birth defects anytime during pregnancy according to : Local 15 TV

A new CDC report reveals all pregnant women could see birth defects if infected with the Zika virus at any time. West Nile and the Zika virus are big health threats when it comes to mosquitos. It's that time of year again, where you'll see night-time mosquito spraying trucks across the County. According to the report the risk of defects appear to be slightly higher if the infection occurred earlier in pregnancy. Mobile County Health department has launched its attack on the mosquito population.

They found that around 5 percent of these women gave birth to babies with defects such as small heads (microcephaly), brain abnormalities and other severe birth defects. The CDC also published a report with the numbers of pregnant women with the Zika virus who gave birth to babies with congenital disabilities. The CDC identified 2,549 pregnant women with Zika in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories between Jan. 1, 2016 and April 25, 2017. The federal health agency said Puerto Rico reported over 3,300 pregnant women with laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus infection.

Zika birth defects in 5% of infected women in USMIAMI: Five percent of women in the US territories who were infected with the Zika virus while pregnant had fetus or babies with defects, including microcephaly, government health data said Thursday. Among these women, 1,508 had confirmed Zika virus infection from Jan 1, 2016 to April 25, 2017. The findings were based on the cases of 2,549 women with possible Zika virus infection who completed their pregnancies. Zika may lead to an itchy rash and although it is dangerous for pregnant women and their fetuses, it often causes no symptoms in adults. Pregnant women are urged to avoid areas where Zika is spreading.
