Yesterday, the country's Ministry of Health told the World Health Organization that one of the deaths was caused by the Ebola virus. Since the end of April, a number of people in northern Democratic Republic of the Congo have become sick with an "undiagnosed illness," and three people have died as a result. Based on the lab-confirmed case, the WHO has declared an official outbreak, the first in the country since 2014. People also contract the virus when they get into contact with the saliva, blood, or feces of other infected people.

On Thursday, the DRC's health ministry informed WHO that of five laboratory samples tested, one tested positive for Ebola virus at a laboratory in Kinshasa. "Our country must confront an outbreak of the Ebola virus that constitutes a public health crisis of international significance," the ministry said.
