Sea lion drags young girl into water at Richmond’s Steveston Wharf stat : vancouversun

A sea lion was captured on video dragging a young girl into the water at Richmond's Steveston Fisherman Wharf. "The sea lion actually attracted a lot of attention from the visitors there, including the young girl," he said. Originally, it looked like it was just going to be peaceful footage of a sea lion swimming in circles, putting on a show for the tourists at the wharf. "I was just sitting by the dock and then this sea lion popped its head out of the water just in front of me. But after surveying the area and discovering no fish, the sea lion surprises everyone by approaching a young girl, then suddenly, biting down on her dress and dragging her backwards into the water.

According to Section 7 of the federal government's Marine Mammal Regulations, anyone who disturbs a marine mammal, except when legally fishing, can face a maximum penalty of a $100,000 fine. He says fisherman and dock staff frequently warn tourists and visitors against feeding sea lions, but the behaviour persists. "Sea lions can carry some really nasty bacteria in their mouth. There are also signs printed from Fisheries and Oceans Canada that detail the potential risks of feeding sea lions and the repercussions of doing so. Male sea lions are known to be highly territorial and willing to attack humans, especially during mating season.

According to Canada's Marine Mammal Regulations, "no person shall disturb a marine mammal except when fishing." A Richmond resident captured dramatic video on Saturday showing a sea lion grabbing a young girl by the dress and dragging her into the water off a dock at Steveston in Richmond, B.C. SFU student Michael Fujiwara was on the dock when he saw the large, male sea lion approach, so he started filming it as a crowd gathered around the animal. Trites says the sea lion in the video looks like it is used to having people feed it. "This was a male California sea lion.
