City prepares to fight Zika as mosquito season begins stat : NBC4i

The Columbus Public Health department says Zika can be a year-round threat when traveling–however, it starts sounding like more of a concern around this time because it's mosquito season. Vector control program manager Columbus public health, Ryan Younge, sees that testing for the Zika virus on the mosquitoes first hand. There are currently 2 confirmed Zika cases in Columbus and another case is being tested. The city sets up anywhere from 50-60 traps around the city and tests water for mosquito larvae. COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Last year, 12 cases of Zika were found in Franklin County.

A new study suggests the worrisome Zika virus apparently has been in Brazil at least a year longer than experts previously thought. A CDC report released earlier this month found that one in 10 pregnant women with Zika gave birth to a child with serious birth defects. California's first line of defense in keeping the virus at bay is mosquito control. Through February of this year, New York state dropped $2.1 million on Zika prevention and it is still developing its budget to address prevention this summer. Other StatesFlorida, New York and California may have seen the most symptomatic Zika cases in the U.S., but numerous other states are working to combat the virus as warm weather approaches.

"Everyone has a role to play when it comes to preventing Zika virus and the potential spread of Zika in their community," said Gov. "The risks of Zika virus to pregnant women and their unborn children are very serious. CDC has issued travel notices for people traveling to international destinations and U.S. territories where Zika virus is spreading. When you take steps to prevent Zika virus, you are not only protecting yourself, you are helping to protect Virginia's pregnant women and their babies. The CDC also recommends that pregnant women not travel to any area where there is risk of Zika infection.
