The life-threatening infection, though rare, can start from a small injury such as a small cut. Dana Sedgewick, 44, had a trim with a brand new razor, but ended up in a coma after she developed a flesh-eating infection. Necrotising fasciitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection that affects the tissue beneath the skin, the surrounding muscles and organs. Dana said: "Like a lot of women, I tried to keep a tidy bikini line. Sepsis can also be caused by viral or fungal infections, although bacterial infections are by far the most common cause.

When her daughter found her lying on the bed with her legs covered in a bloody red rash, she was taken in for another examination. Doctors attempted to remove the rotting skin, but developed sepsis during the procedure. Dana Sedgewick, from the UK, was shaving her bikini area when she caught a spot. Dr Ron Daniels BEM, chief executive of the UK Sepsis Trust, said "Anyone with flu-like symptoms and one or more of the key signs of sepsis must call an ambulance immediately.
