Late-season flu slams Sox as club battles to rebound quoting : Boston Herald

Right fielder Mookie Betts is expected to be back in the lineup today after returning from a three-day flu quarantine. And though their players appear to be dropping like flies, the Red Sox were crossing their fingers. "And we'll see how he feels when he comes in tomorrow."The flu bug has been relentless after it settled into the Red Sox clubhouse during spring training. "The way the flu is spread is like many of the communicable diseases, it's all aerosol. "If I were managing this, I would say, it's never too late to get your flu vaccine," he added.

Late-season flu slams Sox as club battles to rebound
BOSTON -- Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter made an interesting facebook/" target="_blank">comment before today's Red Sox and Orioles game here at Fenway Park. Mookie Betts, Robbie Ross Jr., Mitch Moreland, Hanley Ramirez and Andrew Benintendi are among the Red Sox players who have been sick. "I don't know where we are with the flu today," Showalter told Baltimore reporters, per The Baltimore Sun. Ramirez returned to the Red Sox lineup today after missing all four games in Detroit. He might have been taking a subtle jab at the Red Sox who had several players miss time during the first week because of the flu.

The Red Sox are being decimated by the flu

The Red Sox are still the division favorites, but some weird outside factors are doing everything they can to hold Boston back. The flu is the most noteworthy issue going on with the Red Sox, but their roster is in short-term shambles for other reasons, too. Along with Betts, Ramirez and Ross, the Red Sox are without shortstop Xander Bogaerts and reliever Matt Barnes, who are both on bereavement leave. * * *If you've paid any attention to the Tigers-Red Sox series that has been going on in Detroit this weekend, you've probably noticed that the Red Sox roster hasn't looked as you may have expected. Betts and Ramirez are just the most notable players currently sitting out because of this illness, of which there are apparently three strains circulating the Red Sox clubhouse.
