Expectant mother with Zika virus expected to give birth in Corpu - KRISTV.com according to : Home - KRISTV

Dr. Burgin said, "Now that 'micro' meaning small, 'cephaly' meaning head so they have small heads, small brains and consequently have complications with learning and speech." Dr. Burgin says most likely the expectant mother didn't know she had the Zika virus when she got pregnant but through testing, doctors believe her child will suffer from Microcephaly. A woman infected with the Zika virus is being treated at a Corpus Christi hospital and local health officials say there is no cause for concern for the general public. According to doctors, the woman who is pregnant contracted the virus while she may have been traveling through Mexico. That woman was not infected with Zika here in the Coastal Bend.

Zika virus vaccine now in development

Researchers are one step closer to developing a vaccine for the Zika virus. Birth defects linked to Zika include vision and hearing defects, learning disabilities, and in extreme cases, microcephaly, which prevents the head and brain from developing correctly. 90 healthy adults will be divided into groups and receive different doses of the vaccine, testing its safety. The trial is fully funded through this phase, but money for the next phase is still up in the air. Researchers will then conduct a randomized control trial, using either the vaccine or a placebo, on 24-hundred people who are not infected, but who live in areas where Zika has been transmitted.
