Buck Showalter insists that he wasn't trying to needle the Red Sox in his comments about the flu epidemic sweeping the clubhouse. The Red Sox have gone 3-3 in their first six games and have not had their optimal lineup on the field since Opening Day. Red Sox manager John Farrell defended himself by saying he merely has been explaining why players are absent from the lineup. It seems, then, that Showalter is either blaming the Red Sox for accentuating their health issues or the media for reporting about it. Told that his comments Tuesday would seem to indicate he was trying to at least tweak the Red Sox, Showalter said, "No, I don't think it would.
Without much need for lefties, right-handed Taylor pitched in three of the team's first eight games. He saved the bullpen after starter Steven Wright flopped, and because he pitched so many innings, Taylor won't be available for a few days. Ross has been out with the flu, one of the most severe cases of an illness that struck many players in the Red Sox clubhouse during the first week of the season. In this case, it's lefty Robbie Ross Jr., coming off the disabled list to rejoin the bullpen. An unexpected part of the Opening Day roster, Taylor pitched to a 1.69 ERA and seven strikeouts through his first 5-1/3 Major League innings.
