Times of India : declared in Deadly virus strain of pathogenic bird flu H5N8 found, alarm in zoo

HYDERABAD: In a major cause for concern, researchers have found a new strain of highly pathogenic bird flu virus H5N8 in India. But now researchers reveal it is a new version of H5N8 carrying the genetic material of H5N8 viruses in other countri es. The strain of H5N8 carries two gene pools from the H5N8 viruses isolated in Russian Federation, Mongolia, Vietnam, China and Eurasia.Bird flu in the country is normally associated with H5N1 strain of the virus. "They are 7:1 reassortants of H5N8 viruses isolated in May 2016 from wild birds in the Russian Federation and China. But now a newly re-assorted strain of H5N8, which has thus far been limited to other countries, has entered India.


Alabama officials concerned about spread of avian flu virus

State officials say they've identified cases in Lauderdale, Jackson and Madison counties. The state has been actively planning in case such an outbreak occurs, Alabama Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan told WHNT News 19. McMillan said protocols include growers "depopulating" chickens that may be exposed to the avian flu virus, and agriculture officials setting up a 6-mile quarantine zone around the property that monitors movement in and out. Avian flu was reported in Lincoln County, Tenn. on March 5 and in the past week in Alabama.

Malaysia raises alert as bird flu virus hits more birds
Malaysian authorities raised an alert for a northeastern state after the virulent H5N1 bird flu virus was found to have spread to poultry in more villages. Veterinary officials told local media that the virus could have been due to cockfighting activities involving roosters from neighboring countries. Che Abdullah said commercial bird farms in the state were not affected by the virus. Che Abdullah said officials believed the virus was imported but have not determined the cause of the outbreak. More than a dozen people showing bird flu symptoms tested negative for the virus, he said.
