Health professionals discuss Zika virus prevention in Abilene stat : KTXS

Health professionals in Abilene talk...ABILENE, Texas - Students, doctors, and nurses at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Abilene met Monday afternoon to talk about ways of preventing the spread of Zika virus. Taylor County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Vincent Cantu explained that though Zika has not been identified in Taylor County, mosquitos that are able to carry and transmit Zika have been found. As of March 10, there have been seven reports of Zika in Texas. Drain containers or tires on your property that can pool water, which creates breeding grounds for mosquitos. The city of Abilene plans to spray for mosquitos should a positive case be found.

Ohio had 94 confirmed travel-associated Zika cases and one sexual transmission Zika case in 2016 and two cases so far this year. Women who have had possible exposure to Zika virus should wait at least eight weeks before having unprotected sex. Go to the ODH website at http://www.odh.ohio.gov/zika for more information about Zika virus. There is no indication that the Zika virus can spread from person to person through casual contact. Zika virus can be passed through sexual transmission, even if the infected person does not have symptoms.
