Researchers used a similar weak spot in the dengue virus to make an anti-viral drug that prevents the virus from replicating, which could provide a model for the anti-Zika efforts. The next step, according to the university, is investigating the antiviral potential of a chemical compound on the Zika virus that has been shown to work against dengue. An analysis of the structure of the protein revealed the weak spot, which could be targeted with inhibitors that would suppress infection.

Feldman said last year there were 174 cases of Zika virus reported in Maryland. "Zika can cause devastating consequences to developing fetuses, so pregnant woman are advised not to travel at all to areas where there is active Zika transmission," Feldman said.
