New Albany catholic school closed due to flu quoting : courier-journal

Illustration (Photo: Thinkstock)Holy Family Catholic School in New Albany will be closed Thursday and Friday due to a flu outbreak, the school's principal confirmed Wednesday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, about 65 to 75 of Holy Family's 325 students were absent from school with the flu, Ernstberger said. Principal Jerry Ernstberger said Holy Family announced the decision around dismissal time Wednesday at the recommendation of health officials. "This is the first time (the school has closed due to illness) in many, many years," Ernstberger said. Officials in Knoxville, Tennessee last week sent the city's entire school district home after absentee rates of 12 percent.

Back in October, the school offered Flu shots to faculty, but not students. The school has students from 2nd to 12th grade, and no one knows why so many fell ill. Flu shots are not one of them."At this point, students and faculty are waiting for February break on the 20th, so they can have an entire week to rest and recuperate. Sister Dolce: "The weather has been either way too cold or way too rainy to get the kids outside for recess, because we give everybody, the youngest to the oldest recess every day. Sister Dolce: "We sent many notices home to parents and encouraged them to get their children a Flu shot, but legally there are certain immunizations that we have to mandate.

The closure comes after a recommendation from Floyd County health officer Tom Harris. No other schools in the area are closed for the flu. "So the decision was made to close the school Thursday and Friday. "Their viral rate was in the 20 percent range at the start of the week and it's increased up to 24 percent today," Harris said.
