× Health officials: Five Oklahomans died from the Flu last week, bringing total deaths to 28OKLAHOMA CITY – Health officials across the state say five Oklahomans died last week due to the flu. Flu symptoms include:Fever more than 100.4° F (38 C)Aching muscles, especially in your back, arms and legsChills and sweatsHeadacheDry, persistent coughFatigue and weaknessNasal congestionSore throat. Last week, the Oklahoma State Department of Health announced a significant jump in the number of deaths related to the virus. In one week, the number of deaths from the Flu this season more than doubled to 23. Officials say residents in Tulsa County has been hardest hit by the Flu this season, leading to nine deaths in that county.

• Encourage others to stay home from work, school and other public places if they are ill.Stay home from work, school, and other public places if you are ill. • Make "respiratory hygiene" a habit, including use of tissues to cover coughs and sneezes, then disposing of them and performing hand hygiene at once. When tissues are not readily available, use your sleeve, never your hands. In addition to getting your flu shot, the Oklahoma State Department of Health reminds you to follow these prevention tips:• Frequent hand hygiene using soap and water, or alcohol-based products such as hand gels when hands are not visibly soiled.

Pediatric flu deaths reported

Not all of these deaths are directly related to the flu but many are – and possibly could be prevented with a flu vaccine. For additional information, call the Scioto County Health Department Nursing Division at 740-355-8358 or the Portsmouth City Health Department Nursing Division at 740-353-8863. The easiest way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a seasonal flu vaccine every year. According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), there is an increase in flu activity across Ohio, including four confirmed pediatric influenza associated deaths. The flu virus is spread mainly by droplets when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk.
