The Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed cases of influenza in the state's sixteen counties. But there's good news: State Epidemiologist Siiri Bennett says the vaccine appears to be a good match to all strains this year.

Flu spreads across 40 states, including South Carolina

South Carolina, New Jersey, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and New York rank as the states with the highest levels of flu and flu-like illness activity. "There is some overlap between the common cold and the flu, but the flu often starts with an abrupt onset of symptoms," Steinberg said. Fifty-one of 54 US states and territories are experiencing elevated levels of flu and flu-like illnesses. "Most healthy people who get influenza infection do fine with getting plenty of fluid and rest," said Dr. Pritish Tosh, an infectious disease physician and researcher at the Mayo Clinic. Typically, flu season in the United States begins in October and reaches its seasonal peak between December and March before slowing through spring.
