Flu season light so far in Summit, but peak period could still be ahead stat : summit daily

"The CDC is anticipating flu season to continue for at least another several weeks, and it's unknown if we've yet to hit the peak," said Lopez. "Because the flu is passed person to person, that protection goes outside the individual and extends into our community." There have been just three flu hospitalizations in Summit County so far this season, but the latest from Colorado's health department shows influenza activity remains on the rise. "Getting vaccinated has an enormously profound effect on the health of the entire population," said Sara Lopez, Summit County Public Health nurse. Lopez noted a common hesitation among people who opt not to get an annual flu shot is they believe their immune system is very healthy and they rarely get sick.

"We are seeing patients with flu-like symptoms," said Natalie Ikeman, a physician assistant, at the HCMC Golden Valley Clinic. So far this season she says 1,156 Minnesotans have been hospitalized with the flu and it's possible that number could surpass last year's number of 1,541. Martin says the dominant strains of the flu, like the H1 and H3 can change from year to year and it appears this season, we have a bad strain out there. She says flu activity is widespread in at least 46 states including Minnesota.
