SOFIA Bulgaria is providing 9.7 million levs ($5.3 million) to poultry farmers to help contain a bird flu virus outbreak and protect its position as the world's second biggest producer of duck foie gras, the government said on Wednesday.The highly pathogenic virus has spread to 60 poultry farms since mid-December, prompting veterinary authorities to cull over 450,000 birds, agriculture ministry data showed.Outbreaks were reported mainly in duck-fattening farms in the southern region of Plovdiv where some 380,000 ducks had to be culled in a serious blow to output of fattened duck liver in the European Union's poorest member state.

Greece has reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N8 bird flu virus among laying hens on a farm in the southern part of the country, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Thursday, citing a report from the Greek farm ministry.The country had already reported a case of H5N8 in a swan in December but this would be the first outbreak on a farm.Some 28,000 hens died of the virus, the report said.

SANTIAGO Bird flu has been found at a turkey farm in central Chile, the second case of the disease detected in the country this month, agriculture officials said on Wednesday.Respiratory problems had been seen in birds at a turkey farm in the central Valparaiso region, the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) said in a statement.The strain was confirmed as H7, with low pathogenicity.

PARIS China reported an outbreak of the highly contagious H5N8 bird flu virus among swans at a zoo in the city of Wuhan, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Thursday, citing a report from the Chinese agriculture ministry.Of 314 swans at risk from the outbreak, 99 died from the virus and the rest were slaughtered, according to the report posted by the Paris-based OIE.China has been hit by outbreaks of other bird flu strains in recent weeks, including the H7N9 virus that has caused a number of human deaths.
