A candidate Zika virus vaccine supported by the US Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) has entered a phase 1 trial, the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) said yesterday in a statement, while Angola has reported Zika cases.The vaccine, developed by Moderna Therapeutics, based on Cambridge, Mass., uses novel messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.ASPR said the trial is designed to test safety as well as the immunogenicity of different vaccine doses.

MERIDEN — Protein Sciences Corp. announced Thursday that its Zika vaccine candidate will move to clinical study in April 2017.The Research Parkway company is developing the vaccine with four international partners: Mundo Sano and Sinergium Biotech in Argentina, Liomont in Mexico and UMN Pharma in Japan.Three of the partners are based in Latin America where Zika infection in pregnant women has resulted in serious birth defects.

The Meriden-based maker of the Flublok influenza vaccine announced Thursday its lead Zika vaccine candidate performed well in pre-clinical studies.Protein Sciences Corp., a vaccine development company, said good safety results included inducing strong neutralizing antibodies against the Zika virus.The product is expected to advance into human clinical trials in April, the company said.
