North Carolina health officials warned Tuesday that we're about to hit the peak of the 2016-17 flu season and the virus is widespread.They said influenza activity and flu-related deaths are rising.Three influenza-associated deaths were reported during the week ending Dec. 31.There have now been seven flu-related deaths statewide during this flu season.Flu can be a serious illness, especially for adults over age 65, children under five, pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease.State health officials said they want to see people protect themselves and others.Although vaccination early in the season is recommended, it is never too late to get vaccinated and help protect yourself and others from the spread of this dangerous, sometimes deadly virus.
