Government confirms avian flu virus case on Yunlin duck farm

Taipei, Dec. 31 (CNA) The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ) under the Council of Agriculture confirmed on Saturday that ducklings at a farm in Yunlin county, central Taiwan, were found to have been infected with the H5 subtype avian influenza virus and that as a result the farm's 2,681 ducklings had been culled.The BAPHIQ said in a statement that the Animal and Plant Disease Control Center in Yunlin sent personnel to inspect an outdoor duck farm in Citong Township on Dec. 29 after receiving information of abnormalities at the facility and sent collected specimens to the Animal Health Research Institute (AHRI).The institute on Dec. 30 confirmed that the ducklings at the farm were infected with the virus HPAI, a highly pathogenic H5 subtype of avian influenza.

Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus – ChinaOn 12 December 2016, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of China notified WHO of six (6) additional cases of laboratory-confirmed human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus.Onset date of symptoms ranged from 6 to 20 November 2016.Cases ranged in age from 32 to 80 years with a median age of 61 years, and all cases are male.
