EDMONTON—Alberta Health Services is notifying about 11,500 patients that they may have been exposed to an infection during open-heart surgery.Officials say Health Canada has reported that a device used to heat and cool blood during surgery has been linked to mycobacteria.Alberta Health Services says it has used the device at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, as well as at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute has sent letters to 5,100 patients warning them they may have been exposed to an infection during open-heart surgery.The letters were sent out over the past 10 days to patients who were on bypass machines during open-heart surgery between 2012 and 2016, the Heart Institute confirmed Thursday.Heather Sherrard, the Heart Institute's executive vice-president of clinical operations, said the risk to patients of becoming infected with non-tuberculosis mycobacterium (NTM) transmitted by the heater-cooler devices used during cardiac surgery, is very low — estimated at less than one per cent.

Health Canada issued an alert in late October to hospitals across the country about the potential risk of infection from heater-cooler devices used during open-heart surgery.These devices are described by Health Canada as "non-sterile devices" used in the operating room to control the patient's blood temperature during cardiothoracic surgeries, as well as other medical and surgical procedures when heating and cooling of blood is required.Health Canada said there are international reports of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections associated with heater-cooler devices used in cardiothoracic surgery and a small number of possible Canadian cases are under investigation.

The Ottawa Heart Institute has sent letters to 5,500 patients who in the last five years had open heart surgery, warning them they may have been exposed to an infection from a machine used during the procedures.The risk stems from problems cleaning a contaminated piece of operating room equipment, which is used during open heart surgery to keep a patient's body at exactly the right temperature.The letter was sent to all of the patients who had the surgeries going back to 2012.
