Saskatoon's health region is warning almost 2,200 patients who've received open-heart surgery over the last five years of a potential infection linked to a medical device.The region says Health Canada, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and addiction Administration are investigating reports a machine used to regulate blood temperature during open-heart surgery has been linked to rare bacterial infection, known as NTM — or non-tuberculous mycobacterium — infection.Letters are being sent to all patients who received the surgery in Saskatoon between 2011 and 2016.

Baystate to notify heart surgery patients of infection risk

SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Medical Center in Springfield will notify up to 1,800 cardiac surgery patients of a potential infection risk.Baystate says a heater-cooler device known as the Stockert 3T was used during open-heart surgeries between 2012 and February of this year and is no longer used during the surgeries.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified it as the source of bacterial transmission at hospitals in the U.S. and in Europe.

The Saskatoon Health Region is sending out advisories to patients who had open heart surgery in the past five years.The region said a blood heating and cooling device used during surgery may have passed on an infection.While the risk is fairly low, the region is talking to patients and doctors to make sure everyone affected is aware.
