People born before 1968 are likely to be protected from a dangerous strain of bird flu, a study has indicated.Until now, it was believed that previous exposure to a flu virus conferred little or no immunity against new influenza that can jump from animals into humans, such as the H5N1 strain that has infected hundreds of people in the Far East.But research from the University of Arizona and the University of California suggests that the vast majority of people exposed to H1 or H2 strains of flu as children are largely protected against H5N1.

VIENNA (Reuters) - Bird flu has been found in the corpses of wild ducks near Austria's border with Germany and Switzerland, Austrian authorities said on Tuesday, adding there was no evidence the virus could be transmitted to humans.Five ducks with the H5N8 subtype of the virus were found near Lake Constance, a health ministry spokesman said.Further measures would be decided once it was clear how pathogenic the cases were.

VIENNA/ZURICH Austria and Switzerland on Thursday took precautionary steps to prevent the spread of bird flu to domestic poultry after discovering cases of the disease in wild ducks around Lake Constance, the latest in a series of cases across Europe.Austria ordered farms within 1 km (0.6 mile) of the shoreline of the lake, which also borders Germany, to keep all poultry indoors.Switzerland took similar measures.
