BERLIN — The news agency dpa reports that some 8,800 geese on two poultry farms will be culled in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein because some of the animals are infected with the bird flu.Dpa said Sunday it was not clear yet whether the birds were infected with the H5N8 strain that has been detected in wilds bird across 10 German states since Nov. 8.Last week, 30,000 chickens were destroyed in Schleswig-Holstein after H5N8 was detected in their enclosure.

HELSINKI The first confirmed case of H5N8 bird flu has been detected in Finland amid a recent outbreak of the disease in Europe, the Finnish Food Safety authority said on Friday.The highly pathogenic H5N8 virus was found in wild birds in the Aland islands in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden, the office said in a statement.The government on Friday ordered poultry farmers to keep flocks indoors to avoid the disease spreading.

The ministry for agriculture in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein has ordered 8,800 geese on two poultry farms to be killed after some of the animals were found to be infected with avian flu.On its website, the ministry said that so far only a low pathogenic strain of H5 avian influenza virus had been detected at one location holding 1,800 geese.It said analyses were being carried out to determine whether the high pathogenic strain H5N8 was also present.

South Korea's agriculture ministry said on Friday a temporary nationwide standstill order for poultry farms and related transport will take effect over the weekend in a bid to contain a wider spread of H5N6 bird flu, a severe strain of the disease.The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement that the movement control order will be put in place for 48 hours, effective from 1500 GMT on Friday - midnight in South Korea.The move comes as the number of cases of the highly pathogenic H5N6 strain rose to six on Friday since the first cases were reported a week ago.
