PARIS Russia reported two outbreaks of highly contagious bird flu virus among backyard birds in the southwestern part of the country, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Wednesday, citing a report from the Russian farm ministry.The H5 avian influenza virus was detected in domestic birds including geese, hens, guinea fowls in the Republic of Kalmykia, near the Caspian Sea, the ministry said in the report posted on the OIE website.However, it was still unclear whether it was the H5N8 virus which has hit wild birds and farms in several countries in Europe and the Middle East since last month.

South Korea slaughters 100,000 ducks as new bird flu cases emerge
The South Korean government on Wednesday confirmed the slaughter of almost 100,000 poultry birds in an attempt to thwart the spread of bird flu, as two new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza were detected bringing the total number of such cases in the country to four.According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the new cases of the virus belonging to the H5N6 strain were discovered at a duck farm in Cheongju, roughly 84 kms from Seoul, and another in Muan, Efe news agency reported.The two new cases forced farmers to cull 30,500 ducks in the two farms while enacting strict quarantine measures around the farms.

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania has temporarily suspended the import of fowl from European Union countries reporting cases of bird flu.The Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday ordered suspension of all fowl imports from Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Poland, the Netherlands and Switzerland, all of which have reported H5N8 virus cases.The ministry also ordered poultry farmers to keep their birds indoors and to watch for signs of infections.
