U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Photo: CDC)Federal health officials on Thursday issued a warning about the risk of contracting a life-threatening infection from a popular piece of equipment used during open-heart surgery. The warning stems from an investigation conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention into the LivaNova, formerly Sorin, 3T heater-cooler devices which concludes they may have been contaminated with the infection during manufacture.CDC is warning patients who've had open heart surgery to seek medical care if they're experiencing night sweats, muscle aches, weight loss, fatigue, fever or other symptoms associated with the infection — Mycobacterium chimaera — saying that some patients in the investigation have died.
