New research provides biological evidence of an association between Zika virus infection and Guillain-Barré syndrome.Researchers in Colombia conducted reverse-transcriptase–polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) testing in 42 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome and found a positive Zika infection result for 40%.The authors report, "The identification of the ZIKV genome by RT-PCR in biologic samples from 17 patients with the Guillain–Barré syndrome, together with the presence of immune responses (IgG, IgM, or both) to flaviviruses in the [cerebrospinal fluid] in most of the patients tested, supports the involvement of ZIKV in these cases of the Guillain–Barré syndrome during the outbreak of ZIKV infection in Colombia."
