The Washoe County Health District is reporting the first flu-related death of the 2016/17 flu season in Washoe County.The victim is a middle-aged person under the age of 60 who, in addition to contracting Influenza A – H1N1, had other factors that contributed to the death.The Health District reports influenza surveillance and reporting always begin in late September or early October at week 40 of the calendar year, with the highest flu activity typically peeking in December through February.

Clark County has recorded its first flu-related death of the season — an elderly resident who was hospitalized before dying, the Southern Nevada Health District reported Wednesda.Most details of the case, including the person's gender and date of death, will not be released due to privacy concerns, but the district said the resident was 65 or older."Flu season surveillance has just begun and though activity is mild at this point, a flu-related death serves as a reminder that it can be a serious illness," Dr. Joseph Iser, health district chief health officer, said in a news release.
