Philippines reports three locally transmitted cases of Zika virus
Philippines reports three locally transmitted cases of Zika virusThe new patients lived in the same house as a 45-year-old woman who was diagnosed with the virus in the central city of Iloilo last month, becoming the first locally transmitted case of Zika in the country."All three cases have since recovered from their mild illness and did not require hospitalisation," Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial said, adding that the patients were quarantined at home. The three had no history of travel and were likely to have been infected through mosquito bites, the health department said. Before the woman in Iloilo, four cases of Zika were reported in the Philippines but those people were believed to have been infected while travelling abroad. In 2012, a 15-year-old boy in the central province of Cebu tested positive for the virus but no transmissions were reported. The Zika virus, which is believed to cause brain damage in babies, is transmitted by mosquitoes that also cause dengue fever.- DPA

Florida Republicans urge House to borrow $1 billion to fight Zika virusFlorida Republicans urged House colleagues Tuesday to wave the white flag and borrow more than $1 billion to combat the Zika virus, saying efforts to stave off birth defects tied to the disease outweigh election-year concerns about the deficit.Mosquitoes have infected more than 60 people in Miami and other pockets of the state, prompting companies and tourists to move their dollars out of the state and increasing the risk of microcephaly, a condition in which babies are born with abnormally small heads.Officials say medical bills for each of those newborns can reach up to $10 million over a lifetime.
