LANSING, MI – One person was hospitalized and seven others have been made ill by a type of influenza that health and agriculture officials say they may have picked up from sick pigs at county fairs.The Michigan Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture and Rural Development announced Friday, Aug. 19 that there have been eight human cases of influenza A variant viruses reported in the state.All of the sick people have tested positive for influenza A H3N2 and all of the confirmed cases came after those people were exposed to swine at county fairs in Muskegon, Cass, and Ingham counties during July and August where sick pigs had also been identified, authorities said.
