KUALA LUMPUR: Another Zika virus infection case has been detected in the country, involving a 67-year-old man from Petaling Jaya.This brings the total number of reported Zika cases to eight so far.Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry received the report on the case on Dec 14, which was detected through the Zika Virus Surveillance System.

PUTRAJAYA: A 67-year-old man from Petaling Jaya, Selangor is the eighth confirmed Zika case in the country.In a statement today, the Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the man, who initially sought treatment for fever, dizziness and diarrhoea on Nov 28, had tested negative for dengue.On Dec 9, National Public Health Laboratory (MKAK) and Institute for Medical Research (IMR) confirmed that the man tested positive Zika, Dr Noor Hisham said.

LA JOLLA, CA--Aedes aegypti mosquitoes harboring parasitic Zika virus (ZIKV) are the primary transmitters of virus to humans, potentially causing catastrophic congenital microcephaly in babies born to women bitten by infected mosquitoes.But confirmation earlier this year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that ZIKV can also be sexually transmitted raised new alarm that virus could be passed between sexual partners in venues far from mosquito habitats.Now La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology (LJI) investigator Sujan Shresta, Ph.D., employs two different mouse models to confirm that live ZIKV placed directly in the vagina infects the mouse's reproductive tract, replicates, moves into the bloodstream, and causes clinical signs of disease.
